All the songs here have a simple, traditional song structure, minimally orchestrated with voice, piano, and the occasional gong or drum. There are very few (if any) chord changes throughout the whole disc, and the chord changes that are present here are very repetitive. The melodies, however, have a grandiose or celestial feel to them, making the music feel bigger or fuller than it is -- and it is this that really makes the music exciting, utilizing unusual chord structures. Lyrics are decidedly political, featuring songs about animal rights, pacifism, the evils of eating meat, and a biting critique of modern colonial expansion. The piano parts are primarily in the upper registers, and this gives the music a chimey sound which compliments Moondog's baritone voice very nicely. A bit too singsongy for more pedestrian tastes and so political that the art suffers somewhat. Trying to top it would be a daunting task, and on Tomboy, Noah Lennox doesn’t attempt it. Instead, he strips away the samples that made Person Pitch so hallucinatory and focuses on guitars, drums, and emotive melodies. A few found sounds make their way into the bookends “You Can Count on Me” and the beatific “Benfica,” giving the impression that Tomboy picks up right where Person Pitch left off, but the album’s overall sound is much sparer: the aptly named “Drone” and the smoky “Scheherazade” are downright minimalistic compared to what came before. Yet Tomboy is just as dreamy and hypnotic in its own way, with Lennox's familiarly looping melodies and structures coated in so much reverb and delay that an intricate collage of samples isn’t necessary to make these songs transporting. “Friendship Bracelet” is more than trippy enough as it flutters by on naïve electronics, while “Slow Motion” is submerged in dub-inspired effects and keyboards. Unlike Person Pitch's immersive miasma of sound, Tomboy takes a more song-based approach to Lennox's fondness for Brian Wilson harmonies and melodies. “Last Night at the Jetty” is a wistful, lysergic slow dance, surrounding vocals that could grace a Four Freshmen ballad with heady swirls of guitar; “Surfer’s Hymn” is a reconfigured teenage symphony that sounds like a memory of summer. Lennox recorded Tomboy in a basement studio in Lisbon, Portugal, and the album reflects those surroundings, providing a moody cocoon of sound to retreat into instead of Person Pitch's expansiveness. A feeling of loss often shadows these songs, and there’s a newfound sense of urgency, particularly on “Tomboy” and the fittingly soaring “Afterburner.” Meanwhile “Alsatian Darn,” which begins with chilly, ballad-like verses that warm into choruses that sound like an underwater folk dance, shows just how much more Lennox can do with less. Despite Tomboy's significant changes, it feels less like a radical shift than a subtle progression; while it may not be quite as dazzling as Person Pitch, it should still please fans of that album and Lennox’s many other outlets. ~ All Music Review

From the time he began releasing music in the late '90s until 2004, lo-fi L.A. songwriter Ariel Pink prolifically wrote and recorded volumes of hazy sounding, structurally fractured pop music under the moniker Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti. These unhinged sounds from his unknown days would develop as his cult status grew into indie success with albums starting in the 2010s, but in his earliest phases, Pink was simply throwing any and every idea at the wall and releasing what stuck as homemade CD-R albums. Of his extensive output in this time, nowhere was he quite as in tune with his west coast pop side as on fifth album House Arrest. The album begins with "Hardcore Pops Are Fun," a direct homage to simpleminded pop music that mangles Beach Boys harmonies and bubblegum melodies with the signature muffled production Pink had been perfecting at the time. "Interesting Results" also approaches jangle pop, but gets cut off at the pass by manically shifting song structures, key changes, and blasts of unexpected percussion. Much of House Arrest moves in this nonlinear fashion, jumping from idea to idea within the same song. The goofy and hamfisted "Gettin' High in the Morning" uses its almost-seven-minute running time skittering between faux-metal riffing, XTC-styled vocal hooks, and Zappa-esque technical intricacy. By this point, Pink had developed a correspondence with established outsider songwriter R. Stevie Moore, and the influence of Moore's irreverent surrealism is all over House Arrest. Would-be dramatic pop songs like "Every Night I Die at Miyagis" and "The People I'm Not" are stopped from taking themselves too seriously at every turn, Pink disrupting their flow with obscene interjections or weird, out-of-place breakdowns. As with all of his early work, Pink's melodic gifts are at odds with his eccentricities throughout the album. Where other albums from this era were swallowed in existential bleakness or gave into cartoonish indulgences, pop gets the upper hand on House Arrest. While it's still far from accessible, it's the album from his early days where Pink buries his songs in strangeness to a lesser degree, letting more of himself come through in the songs. When he allowed his own weird breed of Pacific Ocean pop to come to the surface as it did on House Arrest, Pink indeed achieved some of his most interesting results. ~ All Music Review

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0700/1128/9830/files/brianenoforevervoiceless_99abacd6-aae8-422f-b133-d46a318ccc0c.jpg?v=1746253786
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0700/1128/9830/files/LesleeSmucker-BreathingLandscape_7122f196-8bd8-4fa7-9be5-b9c830e5d6dc.jpg?v=1766443488
bengt-hambraeus-fresque-sonore-transfiguration
Bengt Hambræus - Fresque Sonore/Transfiguration

Swedish Society Discofil, SLT 33181. Like Blood Axis, Wolff displays an interest in all things volkish, but Waldteufel opt for a far more traditional sound utilising accordion, bodhran, violins and cello. It retains an authentic traditional feel of volkish folk music, with the lyrics intoned in German. At times its like an archaic snapshot. The ranks of Camizole included some of the most essential personalities of the French underground, notably Dominique Grimaud (Vidéo-Aventures), Chris Chanet (Etron Fou Leloublan), and Bernard Filipetti (Art & Technique). Their idea of music, if we look further than the pair Dominique Grimaud and Bernard Filipetti, and a style of music influenced by Klaus Schulze, is inspired by the liberty of free jazz. This is nonetheless modified by a cathartic approach close to the esthetic preoccupations of Julian Beck and Judith Malina's Living Theatre. The result is a musical happening, where the important thing is to improvise in the urgency of the moment in front of a not-always receptive public. Before exploring constructed repetitive forms which would be perfected by Urban Sax, Lard Free were more in the domain of noise improvisation, or even a kind of jazz rock similar to that of Soft Machine, as can be heard on a late retrospective album, from which the track "À chacun son Boulez" emerged. There was logically great complicity between Camizole and Lard Free, which would lead to the two groups finally merging. This was the case for four concerts in May before the two groups disbanded in order to finally get to grips with the free rock in the style of Faust that they liked so much. As an ode to anarchy, a record now bears witness to those communal experiences. This LP showcases the group's most experimental free-form side. The 12 musicians involved in these recordings stomp over any distinctions between rock, jazz, folk, or any other musical idiom for that matter. They jam. When a structure arises, either spontaneously or not, the general feel of the music tends to get closer to psychedelic rock and post-rock, something like a freer Godspeed You Black Emperor! or Mushroom, or a more drug-induced Trummerflora Collective. The 12-headed beast is in a constant state of metamorphosis. When you think you've got it figured out, it throws something unexpected at you, like the slow-paced, sensuous Dino Valenti song "Something on Your Mind." Liberation features percussion, electric guitar, vibes, saxophone, violin, some electronics, even a bit of non-intrusive turntablism. Fans of trippy space rock will be in heaven during "The Pigeon" and "Peace on Earth." At all times the music remains calm, paced, introspective in a sense, but all the while cathartic, liberating. These people can amass a whole lot of noise but keep it gentle. Some passages are overlong, but not many, which is unusual in this kind of records. As hodgepodgy, confused, and eclectic their blend may seem, they master it and make it exciting. Actually, Lussier founded Ambiances Magnétiques with Jean Derome in order to support the release of this album -- that's why it bore the catalog number AM 000, something that stuck when it was reissued on CD in 1996. The seven tracks included on Fin du Travail are a chronicle of Lussier's activities between 1979 and 1983, from the Pouet Pouet Band ("Manifeste") and André Duchesne's 1980 project Clockville ("Fête Fatale," "Clockville") to the first 1982 Derome-Lussier "Ambiances Magnétiques" concert ("Worksong"). They have been recorded under various conditions and with various musicians but Derome's presence is the most important. Lussier's unique sense of humor (well, maybe not so unique since Derome shares it) can already be experienced in the album title, "End of Work (Version 1)" -- if it's finished, why call it version one? -- and his carnival-esque references heard in "Fête Fatale." This aspect of his work, which will develop considerably within his duo Les Granules with Derome, is presented in full contrast with his more serene, soft, and textural folk approach inherited from his days with Conventum and the cinematic quality of his writing, the result of numerous soundtracks written for documentaries. The acoustic guitar is more important than the electric and he even plays mandolin on one track. From complex prog rock-derived numbers to avant-folk atmospheres and circus numbers, Fin Du Travail was the work of a man searching for new means of expression, a quest that would become easier with the creation of Ambiances Magnétiques and his encounter in 1986 with Fred Frith. ~ All Music Review

On paper Musiche Per Poche Parti should sound quite unmusical. Mayday At Strobe

Taking in the breadth of work represented on any of its releases, Mako Sica relates an unrealistic variety of influence. “Red Rivers,” from the 2009 “Mayday at Strobe,” turns in a Jamaican-inspired passage not too many bands would be capable of expressing amid an offering concerned with exploring the possibilities of slowly developed melodies and distant, hazy vocal cries.

In its music, Mako Sica belies any sort of wide-eyed, surprise at its surroundings. There’s no way to hear the sort of apprehension people believe newcomers to a major metropolitan area feel. The three men who make up the band are at once representatives of their respective cultures and exemplars of Chicago’s creative spirit. New blood and ideas always push forward the impulses of a community. And while this trio’s called the city home for a while now, its varied heredity contributes to the scene’s exploration of what an immigrant nation sounds like. ~ New City Music

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0700/1128/9830/files/FullSizeRender_99e70f33-0253-43f2-93fa-3845ff6a0934.heic?v=1751578716

traces of the ceiling is the new album by Takako Minekawa, an artistic collaboration between Minekawa who composed, performed and recorded the works contained within - and artist Ippei Matsui, who created and designed the accompanying elaborate five-panel fold out sleeve, risograph inserts, and vinyl. ‘traces of the ceiling’ is also the debut release from our in-house tone poem label.

‘traces of the ceiling’ was recorded in los angeles between 2018 and 2020, and many of the works featured on the release were originally created and released (at that time called ‘untitled’) on the occasion of Ippei Matsui’s 2019 exhibition “HOLY VISITOR” held at NO.12 Gallery in Tokyo, Japan - with the titular track composed for this special new release.

The approach to ‘traces of the ceiling’ is that of a diary - shared between Takako’s intimate musical pieces culled from daily experiences, documented between October and December 2018 (with a single piece recorded in August 2020) - alongside pieces of original silkscreened and risograph printed artwork by Ippei, each with their own unique qualities for the viewer to connect with as an intimate snapshot of the creative process as well as a beautiful intricate momentary work to cherish. Their collaboration began with previous groups ORG and R-STILL, and was influenced by the NEW WAVE and progressive rock trends they were pursuing at the time, as well as by artists like Laurie Anderson, Meredith Monk, and Robert Wilson, who fused minimal music and avant-garde performance. Moreover, their bold incorporation of cutting-edge sampling and house music during that era laid the foundation for DUMB TYPE's sound, marking an important intersection in the history of minimalism, ambient music and performance art in Japan.

In the performance of this work, "Plan for Sleep" (1986), created simultaneously with “Every Dog Has His Day” (1985), Yamanaka took on the role of sound operation. The performance begins with a minimal piece where the tones of the electronic organ and striking phrases from the piano and saxophone race forward in syncopation. Following this, various sound fragments drift over a deafening industrial beat reminiscent of machine noises. There are also pieces that transform the typing sounds of a typewriter into rhythm, showcasing a range of experiments inspired by the then-novel sampling technology, beautifully intertwining with the physicality of the performance.

Additionally, influenced significantly by film music, Yamanaka incorporates a rich tapestry of colors through melancholic melodies that evoke various scenes, from secular jazz to other influences.
